In many ways, hatchbacks are the most practical body type for India. Not only are hatches more affordable (with a few exceptions), they’re cheap to run and mostly cheap to maintain. Compact cars make the most sense on our crowded streets as well. But the sheer number of choices available means the consumer – you – is often stumped as to what the best choice is. I’ll attempt to help you choose the best car for your needs in this comparo through an exhaustive test drive. Even I don’t know who the winner is, yet. There’s a common template to all the cars on test here. They’re all within four metres in length and they all have petrol engines equating to or less than 1200cc. This is because the Indian government, in all its wisdom, has decreed that small cars with small engines shall benefit from an excise reduction. Outright performance expectedly, isn’t what you should expect. Instead, the focus is on drivability and everyday usability while still delivering good fuel efficiency. A good design is half the battle won for a manufacturer. An appealing shape does translate to footfalls into the showroom and eventually some sales. What is truly amazing about the eight cars I’ve tested here is the uniqueness in their design; all eight cars have a distinct visual identity.

Power, opulence and class. Three words synonymous with cars like the Audi A8 6.0L W12 I was comfortably lazing in on the back seat. I open the electronically operated laptop station as well as the snacks table integrated into the back of the co-driver’s seat, take out a can of juice from the chiller located behind the armrest and prepare to sink into a virtual world. What if I was a millionaire, being chauffeured to yet another meeting for a multi-million dollar deal in my top of the line Audi, with 12 cylinders firing lazily under the long hood, while my chauffer piloted the limousine on the expressway to Mumbai at speeds equivalent to the take off velocity of a small sized personal jet plane. And then a huge lump of grey metal, almost the size of my four ringed luxury missile, closes in on the left side of my car. It looks striking and the first thing I notice is the three-pointed star on the hood. Do I need to feel insecure coddled inside my set of wheels, costing about same as a four bedroom flat in a lavish society in Pune? Probably yes - the grey machine in question is the now assembled in India Mercedes S500L with a much lower sticker price.

GM has launched the Cruze with an automatic transmission. The six-speed auto transforms the character of the car and now it is much easier to live with on a day to day basis. The gears shift smoothly and unobtrusively and performance is brisk thanks to the strong engine which produces 150PS and 327Nm of torque. In traffic, the Cruze is much easier to drive with the auto ’box, especially in the typical stop and start conditions of Pune. The high torque, however, means the tendency to ‘creep’ in D is very high. All automatic cars creep in D, the Cruze just a little more so than most. The steering has a strong self-centering action, but the wheel itself is chunky and nice to hold. You can use the gearbox in manual mode too by slotting the lever to the left, which is useful when you are on a twisty bit of tarmac. In manual mode, the gearbox will not shift up, even when you hit the 4500rpm redline. However, shifts are a little slow when you nudge the lever and you tend to miss the usability and tactility of certain other dual clutch auto ’boxes.
